Many people confuse joy and happiness as being the same emotion that comes from the same place and produces the same result.[1] However, when we look at these two words from a biblical perspective, we understand the differences they have. The main difference in joy and happiness in the Bible is the source. Worldly possessions and material items make us happy, however, joy is emotionally rooted in our faith in Jesus.[2] Joy is long lasting and deep, while happiness is often temporary and a superficial emotion. Learning to live with joy can bring peace to our lives and carry us through many difficult times.

Living a life full of joy starts with finding peace in God’s presence. As believers, joy in our lives is rooted in the hope we have in Jesus. In order to experience joy we must put our trust in God and acknowledge the work He is doing in our lives and the transformation we are experiencing. The Holy Spirit is also a source of joy in our lives. When we allow Him to work in our lives we exhibit the character values that allow us to overcome the trials we face with joy and peace. This type of joy only comes through surrendering our life to God’s will.[3] True joy is found in the peace and presence of the God that we serve.
Facing joy in trials and tribulations is often more difficult to do than it is to say. We will experience sorrow, sadness, and tough times in our lives. There is no getting away from it. So, we must acknowledge it and learn how to deal with it.[4] Instead of running from the trials we face we must embrace them because when we persevere through these times, we mature in our relationship with God. James tells us, “Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything” (James 1:2-3, NIV). And Nehemiah reminded the Israelites that the “joy of the Lord is your strength” (Nehimiah 8:10, NIV), when they were facing troubles.

So where do we start by trying to apply this to our daily routines? We must first understand that heartbreak here on earth is only temporary. Our eternal joy is found in Jesus through the work of the Holy Spirit here on earth.[5] Living with the joy of the Lord will change your life if you allow it to. David said, “But let all who take refuge in you be glad; let them ever sing for joy. Spread your protection over them, that those who love your name may rejoice in you. Surely, Lord, you bless the righteous; you surround them with your favor as with a shield” (Psalm 5:11-12, NIV). Heather Chapeman points out four reasons that the joy of the Lord can change your life through what David is telling us. Those reasons include: God saves us from sin and separation from Him, God defends us, God blesses us, and God surrounds us[6] These four reasons are great encouragement for us to start living with joy.
Questions to Consider
- Can you think of a recent trial you faced and image how you could have found joy during that time?
- Are you able to differentiate between joy and happiness in your life?
Closing Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank you for your constant presence in my life. Thank you for the joy you have placed in my heart and my life. Father, I pray that you would provide me with opportunities to share this joy with others in my life. I pray that my friends and family members experience joy in their lives as they grow in your Word. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen!
